Speed and agility for Rugby
There is a misconception that “only backs sprint". That's baloney! Props and second rowers can increase their pace as well.
Sprinting is essential in rugby.
All too often we see kids lumber along or jog onto the ball or into contact. If you can move “at pace” into these actions, more speed will lead to added force into contact, which will either bust a tackle, drive a clean out or move an attacker off balance.
Our rugby coaching philosophy is that planning, practice and communication leads to instinctive rugby.
Playing style - depends on the team composition but preference is to play fast, using very competent ball skills, running into space at pace. Our approach is to develop a team that are:
Our coaching method involves:
We will: be reliable, listen, encourage, challenge and provide constructive feedback. We won’t: yell, criticise in front of peers, tolerate lack of effort.
Our sessions are tailored to teach attack, ball skills, defence and breakdown techniques.
Speed and agility is important for all manner of sports. If you can do these actions better, it will give you the edge:
- Touch and Oz Tag - Speed of the dump, catch and pass and gap running
- Netball: Speed to the space, side to side, diagonal and backwards movement.
- Cricket: Running between wickets, fielding and bowler run ups. Acceleration, smooth style and explosiveness.
- Surf life saving: Beach sprinting and flags. Board paddlers and swimmers need to be able to accelerate up the beach to the finish line.
- AFL: Sprint to the ball, to defence and to space.
- Soccer: Sprint to ball, to defence and to space. Side to side and backwards movements also important.
- Hockey: Sprint to ball, to defence and to space. Side to side and backwards movements also important. Stick in hand running and balance.
